Leather jackets come in different shapes and sizes. There are some that are bedazzled with jewelry. Some even make bold statements through graphics on the leather, or the color is out of the ordinary (red, baby blue, etc.). Then there are Cafe Racer leather jackets which skip all of that and provide a minimalist design for a simple, clean, and discreet profile.
If you’re like me, you like to look good without needing all the bells and whistles on your leather jacket. Maybe it’s the confidence. Maybe it’s just wanting to blend in but still giving a distinguished look to yourself. Whatever the case, there is an extraordinary amount of leather jackets with minimalist designs for you. I’ll give you a little history behind them, the various clean and smooth styles you can wear, simple colors to match your outfit, what you can expect to pay for these types of jackets, and my personal leather jacket favorites for a clean profile.
As you begin to learn about other leather jackets, you’ll notice that each type has a specific history to it. While I won’t get into the details of them all here, a simple and classic leather jacket without any extra pockets or extravagant designs is called a Racer or Cafe Racer jacket.
The Cafe Racer is a clean and stripped-down leather jacket with very few details. You’ll usually notice very few zippers (if any) and a small collar. This jacket holds onto a minimalist design as it was created originally for moto racers who needed a durable and lightweight jacket.
Simple leather jackets do have a function, and its existence really came from a need to trim down all the “extra baggage” when racing motorcycles or motorbikes while still protecting the rider from any harm in case of a fall. This is why leather jackets that have a slim and quiet profile are called Moto or Cafe Racer leather jackets.
Their main function is to let the rider ride their bike as quick and fast as possible without any drag while also being shielded from injury. You’ll notice those who ride moto bikes (not the Harley ones, that’s a different story) will usually have a Cafe Racer leather jacket if they’re serious about racing.
While you don’t have to be serious about racing to wear a Cafe Racer leather jacket, you can still get one for its low profile and distinguished look. I myself have one on days where I want to look good but also not attract too much attention.
Typically you’ll find a Cafe Racer leather jacket having very minimal pockets (maybe 2 at best on each side, with one at the top breast if you want to be a little more stylish) along with a low profile collar around the neck. The jacket is usually slim and form-fitting, mainly due to the need to avoid drag during racing. This becomes an extra benefit as, while you don’t have to race, the jacket fits your body and gives your figure a more attractive proportion.
Simple and clean leather jackets are meant to be just as they seem – they blend in well and can match with any outfit that you choose due to their classic look. A classic color that works well with this type of jacket is black or brown, and more often than not, you’ll find these colors in almost any store that sells leather jackets.
Affordable Fashion Investment
Slim and low profile leather jackets come in a large amount of price ranges. This is due to the brand, quality of the leather, and other material that goes into the manufacture of the jacket.
If you’re looking for a ballpark range for a slim and discreet leather jacket, a decent one in my opinion will usually require your investment of $250 to $900. It’s a wide range, but then again, it does depend on the brand and quality of the material. You can find cheaper jackets, but I don’t particularly recommend them.
