“Bah. I have a leather jacket but am I wearing the right clothes to go with it?”
I’m terribly sure this is a question that goes through most people’s minds, whether they’re walking their dog, doing their laundry, or at work. While I can’t say I’ve thought about this question in those scenarios (I walk my cat), I do know that the right leather jacket clothing always makes a difference.
The same goes for your leather jacket. The type of jacket you wear paired with the right clothing can make you stand out above others, whether you’re taking a Sunday stroll or wanting to finally make the right impression on your 15th date (don’t look at me like I speak from experience).
I’m going to show you leather jacket clothing tips you can reference when pairing clothes with your leather jacket. Keep in mind that these are baseline styles and you can get as artistic as you like with them.
The typical style you’ll see mostly with a leather jacket is a t-shirt, jeans, and upscale sneakers/dress shoes, but, as you’ll find later on, it really comes down to three things – color, style, and confidence.
First Things First
When pairing your outfit, using neutral solid colors is best as they’re much easier to work with. Think of black, white, beige, and gray. A pure example is my outfit in the About Me section.
The solid color will also add to a simple yet sophisticated look. For leather jackets, black is usually the best option as it goes with practically anything. Brown would be also be a contender to match with clothing. And remember, pick the type of leather jacket that suits you best.
The days of wearing a suit jacket are disappearing (if not already) as more and more companies are switching to business casual or even simply casual looks. This lets you experiment more with your style and add a genuine leather jacket on top of it all.
The man in the picture looks no different than the network virus in The Matrix who welcomes Keanu Reeves’ character with, “Mr. Anderson,” but he does show a good example of pairing a leather jacket with a business outfit (ties are practically optional too at this point, depending on your job). A brown bomber jacket that allows a fitted white collar shirt stand above it is a perfect choice, along with a designer belt and dark gray pants. If only that shirt was tucked in a bit more.

One of the most popular ways to style a leather jacket, a casual look involves a) the leather jacket, b) a simple t-shirt or v-neck, and c) light or dark jeans. Pair it off with some nice sneakers and you have the total concrete jungle (city) look.
Sometimes people will add on a sweatshirt in colder conditions or to give an edgier urban city look. Or a sweatshirt is just plain comfortable but you don’t want to look like you just woke up in it.
Don’t mind the man’s soul-searching thousand-yard stare. His outfit is a great example of a simple and clean casual look – a brown Cafe Racer leather jacket, gray t-shirt, matching brown belt, and black jeans.
Monochromatic or All Black

A monochromatic style is considered one of the simplest forms of pairing clothing since you’re just pairing different shades of one color, like black or gray. Even though it’s simple, it gives off an amazing look that will turn heads (positively, of course).
The man above looks tired from a long day at the law office, but that doesn’t perturb his sense of styling to include all-black clothing with his black leather jacket. A black t-shirt, black skinny jeans, black Chelsea boots, black motorcycle / double-rider jacket, and a black portfolio to top it all off and make it look like the man’s not just there for a photo.
Cold Weather Wear
Leather jackets can withstand some aspect of the elements, and they also work well in cool conditions. Given you’ll be more focused on keeping warm than making a fashion statement, wearing many layers is important. Clothing pieces such as an undershirt, collared shirt, sweater or sweatshirt, and a more roomy leather jacket complete your outfit as you set across on your journey. Take a look at my Winter Leather Jacket Buyer’s Guide for more tips on wearing a leather jacket in cold places!
The man above looks like he didn’t break a sweat climbing Mt. Everest in the background, and neither should you when pairing your clothes with a leather jacket in cold weather. A brown A-2 Bomber leather jacket provided him more than enough room to wear his collared shirt and sweater together to stay warm and in style.

You can spend a very long time falling off motorbikes or rubbing against rough walls with your leather jacket (please don’t), or you can just buy a distressed one. The rough-edge look of this jacket asks for the same in the clothing you match it with.
T-shirts and jeans can be ripped. You can also pair your jacket with more simple-looking clothes like a t-shirt, untucked collar shirt, or regular jeans. The main point here is to look more edgy or grungy (you can even wear in your jacket yourself).
The man above looks like he lost his future-wife’s wedding ring (probably through the hole in his ripped jeans), but at least he’ll be able to tell her about it in style. A brown lightly-distressed leather jacket is paired with an untucked black collar shirt, white t-shirt, and light color ripped jeans.
One of the most amazing things about wearing a superhero leather jacket is you can truly go all out on styling. Whether you’re getting a jacket for Comic Con to complete your look or you’re a fan of the thousands of superhero movies out there, a superhero leather jacket paired with a casual look can make all the difference.
Superhero leather jackets are one of the Top Styles in Leather Jackets and many cannot wait to buy them when they find out they can actually wear the same jacket famous actors and actresses wear in some of the most popular films like The Avengers.
In the photo above, a man stands with a stylish red leather jacket from Guardians of the Galaxy. He’s paired it with a standard set of jeans but distinguishes his look with a white leather belt. He isn’t guaranteed the same superpowers as in the movie, but he is guaranteed to get hundreds of looks from every direction.
The Right Clothes Make The Cut
Adding the right clothing to your desired style of leather jacket helps in every way. It makes a statement that not only are you able to match colors correctly, but also look good doing it.
So the next time you look into your closet to see what could go well with your leather jacket, know that you’re now equipped with some fine knowledge on how to create your best look.
